THE CITIZEN WRITES PROJECT

ABOUT US

The Citizen Writes Project aims to demonstrate how creative writing and the power of words can influence and inspire. It aims to create more opportunities for the inclusion and representation of culturally diverse stories in our society. The program celebrates voices that are rarely heard in the mainstream media. It aims to encourage the cross-fertilisation of ideas, processes and mediums, and develop, support and showcase under-represented writers. The Citizen Writes Project is an initiative of Carnival of the Bold. In 2019, it was funded by City of Sydney, and supported by Diversity Arts Australia.

In 2018-19, the writers involved in the Citizen Writes Project were selected by an independent judging panel with representatives from top literary institutions such as Sydney Story Factory, Writing NSW, Westwords, Sydney Writers’ Festival, Asia Pacific Writers & Translators, Peril and Southern Crossings. Upon selection, the writers participated in a series of writing workshops led by award-winning writer Dr Roanna Gonsalves. Sentences from each writer’s work were printed on posters and displayed at various locations across the City of Sydney. Excerpts from each writer’s work were read at the launch (see the launch video below) and printed in the launch booklet. Roanna’s launch speech explaining the rationale behind the project can be found below.
